Message from the Dean and Vice President for Health Promotion
As summer winds to a close, students returning to campus are a welcome sight for all of us here at the College of Nursing. I had the pleasure of getting students “pumped up” about our fabulous college of nursing during our student transformation days. I reminded them about our “LIVE WELL” (Lead, Innovate, Vision, Execute, and be Wellness focused, Evidence-based, Life-long learners and Lights for the world) philosophy that differentiates us from all other colleges of nursing throughout the country. Their energy is contagious, and I am reminded of the thrill of being at our college for the first time. Each student’s journey is special and as individual as he or she is; they all bring with them dreams that will turn into reality one day as they transform the world of healthcare as we know it.
We’ve achieved a lot this summer—please read below about some of the amazing new grants and honors we have received, including being re-designated as a National League of Nursing Center of Excellence—and we’re ready for a new year of outstanding teaching, research, evidence-based practice, and learning experiences. We’ve also had fun, especially at our Alumni Society Wine Tasting! You can find a link to our Flickr album of pictures of that outstanding fundraising event below. In addition, we are working with the team designing our new building addition and renovation, which is so exciting. We look forward to engaging our alumni to support our new building addition and the transformation of Newton Hall—this project wouldn’t be possible without philanthropic help from you!
Clinician burnout in the United States has reached epidemic proportions, and here at Ohio State, we’ve decided to do something about it. For the first time, all of our seven health sciences colleges have joined together with the College of Social Work to hold an impactful conference. I hope you can attend our inaugural national Summit on Promoting Well-being and Resilience in Healthcare Providers, September 26-28 at the Hyatt Regency Columbus. You can register here. To learn more about this crisis, read my blog.
Be well and, as always, Go Bucks!

Kelsie Miller, RN-BSN
Ohio State degree: 2015
Current role: president of the College of Nursing Alumni Society; registered nurse in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab at the Fairfield Medical Center
Professionally, I am proud of my commitment to staying connected and active with the College of Nursing and the Alumni Society immediately following graduation. I have gained leadership skills, professional development qualities and networking opportunities that I would have otherwise never acquired. The Alumni Society has been very successful over past years, and I feel honored to have been a part of these accomplishments. I hope to continue my involvement and use the connections I’ve made in my future career endeavors.
Interesting fact: My husband and I live on a small farm and own livestock that we enjoy taking care of in our off time. We are expecting our first child and can’t wait to raise a baby Buckeye!
